Possible Warning Signs of a mental health issue in your teen

Mental health is complicated and difficult, partly because so much of it is still not fully understood. While there are many different diagnoses, the importance can more easily be placed on looking for signs that there may be a concern that needs to be addressed.

While there may be other signs to look for, we have created a short list below that we hope will help.

1.   Unexplained or Sudden Mood Changes

While mood changes during adolescence happen some times, if your teen is exhibiting frequent changes in mood or changes in mood that seem severe, it may be a sign of a mental health issue.

2.   Intense Emotions or Overreactions

As with mood changes, the teen years can bring new emotions that can be difficult to manage. While the occasional outburst is likely normal, consistent overreactions or emotions that are overwhelming could be a sign of something more serious.

3.   Changes in Their Daily Behaviors

Another possible sign that your teen may have a mental health issue is if their behavior changes significantly. If they no longer enjoy things they used to and it seems to be more than one activity, it could be a sign of something more.

4.   Difficulty with Concentrating or Being Still

There are a number of reasons that your teen may have issues being still or concentrating. While they are dealing with a lot of new emotions and experiences that can distract them, if it begins interfering with their ability to function normally, it may be a sign of a problem.

5.   Sudden Weight Loss or Weight Gain

A number of mental health issues can result in significant changes in the weight of teens. Any significant, unexplained change could be a sign of other issues.
